Barley

Barley from VIMAL-AGRO is an valuable grain crop. Are used for human nutrition, animal fodder and as malt in brewing.

Barley is used for various purposes:

  • As concentrated animal fodder.
  • As a component of various health foods.
  • For brewing beer.
  • For bread making.
  • In alcohol manufacturing.
  • For producing malt extract and barley coffee.

Barley crops are divided into three cultivars:

  • Two-row barley.
  • Six-row barley.
  • Intermediate barley.

In six row barley, spikelets are arranged in triplets which alternate along the rachis. In two-row barleys only the central spikelet is fertile, while the other two are reduced. This produces six-row barleys.

Two-row barley has a lower protein content than six-row barley and hus more fermentable sugar content. High protein barley is best suited for animal feed. Malting barley is usually lower protein [10] ('low grain nitrogen', usually produced without a late fertilizer application) which shows more uniform germination, needs shorter steeping, and has less protein in the extract that can make beer cloudy. Two-row barley is traditionally used in English ale style beers. Six-row barley is common in some American lager style beers, especially when adjuncts such as corn and rice are used, whereas two-row malted summer barley is preferred for traditional German beers.
Four-row is unsuitable for brewing.
Intermediate barleydo not have cultivation value.

Barley has a relatively short growing season 60-110 days, is cold-resistant and drought tolerant, under propitious conditions forms a shrub well.
1 Tonne of barley grain consumes 27 to 29 kilo nitrogen, 11 kilo phosphor and 20 to 24 kilo of kalium. Barley is an early -sowing crop. Prolongation of 7 to 10 days
decreases the yield at 20 to 30%. Summer barley grows badly at soils with pH over 5.5. Responses well to fertilizers.
